Another 2024 wet day greeted the runners, but in true fell running style, a field of 58 runners started and all finished the windy, rainy, muddy course!!! And as usual the sun eventually came out after everyone arrived back!!! Overall winner was John Carr (Macclesfield Harriers) in 35.20, Jonty Brown (Buxton) 2nd, and David Ratcliffe (Boalloy)3rd. Kate Davies (Staffs Moorlands) was first lady home in 39:00, Wendy Swift (Staffs Moorlands) was 2nd lady, and Faye Waterhouse (Stockport Harriers) 3rd lady, The ladies race being a tight affair with just over a minute between the three of them. In the junior race, Oscar Furness won in 18:46, with Finley Hollinshead in 2nd and Rafe Nightingale 3rd, an even closer finish with just 15 seconds separating them. A special mention to the evergreens, Anne Marie Jones and Mick Moorhouse who turn up every year to support us, and show us all that age is no barrier. Big thankyou to all the runners for turning up on a cold wet Saturday when the football was showing, and especially the marshals and results team, without whom it wouldn’t happen. If the law of averages is a law?? The sun should be with us for 2025!
Bosley Fell Race
The race route follows some footpaths but a lot of the race route is only open for the day of the race, but come and run the local footpaths if you want to recce the course, and enjoy the good local footpath network of challenging hills! and get a feel for the area and the challenges on the day. there are some great longer routes over to Wincle via Shell brook valley and over Croker hill to the north and back via the reservoir which has a circular route around it with just a short section of road. Bosley also links well to the canal towpath for a flatter route if desired.
The race start is Bosley school and runs from the school east towards the reservoir where it joins the footpath running round Bosley reservoir ( A Macclesfield canal feeder reservoir and not a drinking water reservoir) it crosses Smithy lane and runs across farmland towards the footpath running from Stiles meadow farm eastwards towards Bosley/Wincle MInn, eventually joining Minn End lane, where it descends briefly into Shell brook valley soon leaving the drive to Kisswood farm and looping back round a short sharp climb back up to Minn End lane and the highest point on the run. Good views can be had for those wanting a breather in all compass directions towards Shutlingsloe to the north and the Roaches to the east (in case any of you need any reminding of these well known run routes and local high points!) . You will also see good views to the west , the finish a few miles off and some metres lower too! and wider views right out to the Mersey and the Welsh hills if your vision isn't too blurred and you have the time to take the views in! Its not quite all a welcome descent from here but mostly so, and the going will be wet and rough underfoot in a few places to keep your mind on your footing rather than the views at least some of the time! The return leg rejoins the route out just east of Stiles Meadow farm and then retraces the route back over the fields and alongside the reservoir back to school. the route will be marshalled and signed clearly at all points where needed and most gates will be open with no obstructions at all for the first two miles
The map below outlines the routes for both the Junior and Senior races. Both races start and finish at the School. The Senior race shares the lower reaches (both outbound and inbound) with the Junior route, but then adds the extra loop up onto the Minn just below Stiles Meadow
